My son has a 1999 Grand Prix with 3.8 engine and 147,000 miles. I want him to use the new Mobil One EP because I am not sure how diligent he is in oil changes. The Mobil One website recommends 5-30 for under 0 degrees F and 10-40 for over 0.

I have a 5 gallon jug of 5-30 EP--would I damage the engine during the summer running this or should I find a 10-40EP--not sure if Walmart stocks this.

thanks for any and all advice
John

Use the 5W-30 and rest assured. You'd probably do more harm with Minnesota winter starts using 10W-30 than you would using 5W-30 during Minnesota summers

10w30 is the recomended weight not 10w40. I would not worry about 5w30 in the summer too much.

I would use the 5w30 or 10w30 year round. I seem to get more consumption with M1 5w30 than with 10w30, this really makes no sense.

Makes perfect sense. The NOACK of the 5W-30 was not as good as the 10W-30. Many experienced more consumption on the SL. Don't know how the EP will fair.

a 30 wt oil is perfect for that engine. Given the temperatures in MN, go with the 5w-30.

M1 EP is a good oil. We changed my father's toyota previa over to M1 (before EP came out) at about 150-160k, and have been super happy with the choice.

Id suggest changing the first batch of oil in there early (3-5k). After that, use it at least 7500 miles or 1 year.
