A number of times I've seen this statement: "..HDEO's have a different additive package than gasoline-only rated oils ...". What different additives do "C" oils have compared to "S" oils that makes them diesel rated?

Or, is it just different ratios of the same ingredients?

Just curious.

With some older blends, they also had a lot more ZDDP in them. That's changing with the CJ designation, however....

Aren't HDEOs also generally formulated with less emphasis on clean burning, e.g. with more anti-wear additives regardless of their by-products when they burn? I think I heard that somewhere...

EDIT: ZDDP was what I was thinking about in that example.

Absolutely!

Take Motul @ $15.00/qt. It's a double ester base; high TBN; good dose of ZDDP and some moly; detergents and dispersants etc.

Very STOUT and tough. Does not rely on agents to increase viscosity and won't shear.

It is the very best of the very best in my experience.

But yea..with it goes a price tag!
