Different OEM filter compatibility

Hey everyone - great board - first post but I'm a long time viewer.

I have a stash of OEM oil filters from a car I no longer own (2000 Saab 9-5 Aero). My current vehicle is a 2004 Lexus GS300, and I noticed that both cars take the same aftermarket filter (AC PF53, for example). Does that mean I'm ok running the Saab OEM filters on the Lexus? The Saab filters are supposed to be pretty good - but I want to make sure I'm not missing anything.

One of those fat books in the parts store listing filters from different manufacturers often have cross index listings in the back.

Run your OEM numbers through Wix and Donalson along side with your spec'd filters and see if they come up with the same numbers. If not, see what's different. Most likely, if anything, it will be a bypass valve setting ..which may or may not be important depending on how high it is.

Gary - About the bypass... Say the original bypass is 8-11psi and the filter under consideraton is 16psi. Would you say that was an important difference?

Not typically. Purolator has a generic bypass rating of 12-16 ..Wix 8-11 ..anything that spec's either of those filters should not have a problem. Some engines have very specific OEM spec's for bypass valve ratings. Some are high (the Euro's, typically) and some are lower.

Amsoil has two otherwise identical filters. One is some generic bypass valve rating ..and one is specific at 8psi.

I have a feeling that you want to use the longer 16lb bypass valved filter on one of the lower filter's spec'd vehicles.

Taking the lower spec'd filter's number and x'ref'ing to Puro ..you get
