Looking at a '90 Volvo 740 Turbo Intercooled (2.3L B230FT) automatic for a friend of mine. The AMSOIL application guide calls for a 30-wt, but I think I'd recommend a good "euro" 40-wt in this case. Does anyone with Volvo experience know if these engines like thicker or thinner oil? I know the Saab demands thicker oil. This car will do a dose of ARX, and has a rebuilt turbo and new lines, if it matters...and 155K on the clock. No word on internal cleanliness, but previous owner was religious with 3K mi OCI's.

Thanks,

I ran Mobil-1 5w30 in my '98 S70 turbo for over 100,000 miles and the engine still ran like the day I bought it new. Now I realize that the Mobil-1 0w40 is really the oil to use if you want their best all-synthetic european formula for turbo engines that run on the hot side. Personally I think either oil would do the job nicely. In my BMW bi-turbo I run German Castrol, but that is more due to BMW's recommendation to use Castrol. So I thought I'd follow recommendations during warranty.

Another overnight price hike at Wal-Mart (even on our regular food items!), but found two lonely 5.5-qt jugs of Valvoline Full Synthetic 10w-30 for just $18 each...score! So he'll be using that, if he buys the car...or it will go in the in-law's Explorer. Or the Escort. But not the Saab :)

A..the red four..
Runs with anything in the sump its like a european /6!
10-30,10-40,5-30,5-40 etc.
But seriously go with a syn for the hairdrier.
