(thanks)
I was hoping for more info on the formula of TWS10w60 and what in particular makes it so mystical and special that it is such an exclusive solution for the M engines. Can you give some more detail?
(please) :)

Off a German BMW forum - film strength comparison for various engine oils:

MOTUL 4100 Turbolight 10W-40 4,200 kg/cm ²
MOTUL 4100 power 15W-50 4,800 kg/cm ²
MOTUL 6100 synergy 5W-40 5,200 kg/cm ²
Castrol Formula R-S 10W-60 6,800 kg/cm ²
Castrol TWS 10W-60 17,800 kg/cm ²
MOTUL 300V Le Mans 15W-60 22,000 kg/cm ²

The Motul 300V is a pure racing oil. TWS is too, apparently, or at least more than all the rest.

Quaker State makes a 10w60 Q Horsepower Synthetic for Ferarri which meets the BMW spec I believe as well. It is the Shell Helix repackaged and can be ordered through some distributors here.

Really? That's awesome.

I seem to recall BMW saying something along the lines of being okay with Shell Helix Ultra Racing 10w-60, as well as Lubro Moly 10w-60. Can't remember where I saw that, though...

Either way, Shell Helix Ultra Racing 10w-60 is factory and service fill for the Ferrari Enzo, so it can't be horrible.

AFAIK, 300V is a moderately street friendly racing oil. It has at least *some* additives for street use , although barely enough to last 7k miles between changes in even a pristine engine.

Also AFAIK, TWS is much more street oriented than 300V, but you're right that it's still more of a racing oil than the rest.

That film strength spec is impressive.

Motul 6100 5W-40 ,300V 15W-60 and the Castrols are old formulations and have been replaced 2-3 years ago.

Eh? TWS is the pre-year-2000 version of RS 10w-60. I don't think the TWS formulation has changed. Preventing change was the whole point of BMW's exclusive license for TWS. They wanted the old RS formula so they paid Castrol to make it into a BMW-branded product and that guaranteed that Castrol couldn't mess with the blending!

Castrol has changed its product lines in March 07. The old Castrol RS turned in to EDGE and Edge Sport.

Castrol Formula R-S 10W-60 6,800 kg/cm ²
Castrol TWS 10W-60 17,800 kg/cm ²

based on this, they do not equate....

The US site is cloudy on "Edge" products...

Yannis , those are all the new Euro spec Castrol oils.

In the US they have very different names ( and possibly formualtions ).

Catrol Edge 10w60 and the Shell Ultra 10w60 are very popular here where I live amoungst the high reving turbo charge Honda guys ... for eg in a B16A / K20A that has after market cams and a turbo fitted.
