It would help identify the " low molecular weight highly viscoelastic PAO's " from the not so low molecular weight PAO's .
I'm trying to understand a tech paper which refers to these specifically differentiating between low and high mol. weight .
Probably has no direct application to anything other than that .

You really need a Waters GPC unit with the appropriate columns.

Perhaps you can reference the paper and give us more info.
PAO-based synthetic oils and even mineral oils usually contain a mix of various molecular weight base oils and additives, including high molecular weight polymers.
An expensive analytical adsorption unit can separate out the various components as does the the Waters unit:
