The Linux Virus Myth

I think those that are uninformed about how Unix/Linux works will claim that Linux will have as many viruses as Windows if Linux would become as widely used as Windows. That mindset is completely off base for all the reasons mentioned in that link.

The same goes for Mac OSX...assuming that Apple quickly patches security issues as they arise rather than waiting many months to do so.

TnS, they only say that because they can't comprehend that two OSs can be fundamentally different.

Another thing against the argument that Linux has fewer problems than Windows because it's smaller target....Most infections are about the hackers ego.

A bad guy who creates an effective Linux virus will get a lot more street creed than some malcreant that picks on sorry old Windows and adds yet another infection to the thousands of Windows infections that already exist.

Using that "mindset" we can extend to the conclusion that security is only dependent on the # of people using the OS, not any fundamental decisions made during design.... obviously absurd.

Windows security isn't a goal, but a market to sell products. Do you think that anyone is striving to make that market "disappear?"
