The B&S Gold filter for the 18.5 HP B&S in my Craftsman lawn tractor is $15.99 at the local Sears, $11.99 at the local Wal Mart, and $9.99 at the local Lowes.

I buy from Lowes.

The small briggs filters can be replaced with a 3614 fram or equal. It is about an inch longer. I picked up a couple of AAP 3614's when on sale. They work great for $2 each. Sure beats the $12 charged for the B&S 2x short filters.

For Kohler engines give an STP S3614 or a Supertech ST3614 a try. Good price with respectable quality.

Thanks!!

Knowing what those or the MC FL400 would have cost, I'm really gritting my teeth looking at those two $12.00/ea Kohler filters I bought for my stock a few years back (we change oil/filters each fall).

I got them at a lawn/garden supply place; I think they were more than that at Sears.

What a great source of info places like this site are!! Not that $12.00 will break me (at least not today, I think, although the Mrs. hasn't gone shopping yet

), it's just frustrating to be a part of the games that are played on us.

Most of your small engines use a 3/4-16 thread filter. It's the most popular thread in the world. Most of the gasket sizes fall within a narrow range, so cross applications are pretty easy. It just comes down to the amount of room you have to work with.

I just went ahead and put on the $6 wix 51396 on my cub cadet 21hp kholer which is larger and filters better than what came on it.

I have a John Deere L110 with the Kohler 17.5 and use Purolator L10241 or PL10241's. The tall filters such as the Motorcraft FL400's are too tall for this motor and will not fit. Part of the block casting is in the way. I also use Purolator fuel filter #F21124 also, they are alot cheaper than buying the OEM filters, I get them at PEP BOYS for around $3, beats the $6 or more for an OEM filter.

I'm using a Wix 51056 on my John Deere LA110 mower. The only thing I'm gaining by doing this is that I know I'm getting a quality filter. I doubt that I'm saving any money, though; the Wix 51056 is $10.49 at O'Reilly.

My stepfather has the same mower and he runs a Purolator L35310, matter of fact I just picked one up for him today at Advance Auto while I was getting filters for my mowers. Cost $5.88

I purchased a Carquest 85056 for $9.16 today, it looks like a high quality filter, the original Kohler filter that is still on the engine says to change it every other oil change, but the manual says to change it at every oil change, the Kohler filter was $12.99 at Home Depot, before my next oil change I will try to locate the Purolator L35310.

Now I have to find a good deal on the air filter paid $20.00 for the Kohler at Home Depot because I could not find it anywhere else part no :3288303-S1

Be careful using an automotive filter. Not all automotive filters have built in bypass valves. And most small engines don't have internal bypass valves. If using an automotive filter, make sure it has a bypass valve.

Note: All the filters mentioned in this thread, the 3600, 3614, L10241, L, FL400S, 51348, 51773, 51056, 51396, and PF2 have bypass valves and should be fine.

Btw Bill you have the 51334 listed twice with different heights, and the 51357 is shown on wix's site as having the same 3.4" height as the 51356. It just has a lower burst pressure than the 51356 and may have different media.

Is there a cross reference anywhere to keep me from buying briggs oil filters? They are robbing me at around 9.00 for a filter. At one time I put a delco pf 53 (i think) on it. I used it on a old 2.5 4 banger engine on a s10 chevy. Its a briggs vanguard 14 hp twin cylinder engine. I even used the delco filter on a harley davidson sportster.

I wish I could just buy a wix filter for everything. Is there anyplace on line to buy wix filters that have a decent price? AS it it now, I have motorcraft, ac delco, briggs and stratton, and harley davison filters and its a major pain to get all of them. Wix Im sure is probably just as good as all of these. Im tired of being ripped off from HD and briggs. The motorcraft and delco filters are pretty cheap and seem to be just as good.

Wix 57035 and Napa 7035 for your B&S. You can order the Wix filters at fleetfilter.com I run the NAPA 7035 on my 16hp Vanguard.

wixfilters.com has a good cross reference feature from manufacturer and competing filter maker part numbers. Once you have the Wix number you can look up their specs for it.

They also have basic specs for each part type. For example, the 51056 mentioned in this thread is pretty much the same as the 51516 except that the 51516 is much taller and is a common Ford fitment while the shorter 51056 is found on small engines. The 51516 crosses to the FL400S Motorcraft part. If I had an 51056 application on which there was room for the FL400S I would use the Motorocraft part for sure.

Bill,

Thanks for all of the info!!

One question though, the purolators (except L35310) all list bypass pressures of 12-15 lbs, would this be a problem for a 22hp briggs v-twin?

Thanks in advance for any help!!

Kenny

I did some cross referencing & found that an Amsoil EAO57 filter works on Briggs & Stratton. I used one on a 16hp & plan to use on current 21hp John Deere LA120.
I use the same filter (EAO57) on 04 Toyota Tacoma 4 cyl & 05 Tacoma 6 cyl.
