Who makes the best PC based auto code/parameter scanner?

My local mechanic uses a Snap-On branded scanner that makes those little code readers the chain stores use and sell look like toys. I'd like to get something that utilizes the power of a laptop computer to do all the code and engine parameter processing and displaying that the REAL scanners facilitate, but only lay out a mere fraction of the cash one would normally have to spend.

Any recommendations?

Thanks!

For what kind of vehicle? Some vehicle require additional interfaces for full functionality.

carsoft or autoenginuity seem to be good.
