many years ago in NZ i had a triumph bonneville which would not run in, i.e. smoked alot and dripped oil from the 'zorst

i went to BP and bought an additive which was added to the fuel and run for exactly 100 miles and then drained and fresh fuel added and oil changed

the additive supposedly formed a fine ash which seated the rings, presto, my engine rebuild was fine

it must have been peculiar stuff, coz i had to sign a waiver not to come back to bp if i damaged my engine

what was this stuff, and is it still available ?

thanx in advance, johnny

I imagine that there are a few common agents that would produce the light ash that you speak of. An old trick in our ancient history was adding a powder cleanser with silica in it down the carb.

Nice bike 3 carbs 3 cylinders .. most impressive for its time. A friend of mine had one. Oddly his appeared setup for trail (there was no such thing, to my knowledge, as a "dirt bike" back then). High exhaust ..etc.

'zorst = exhaust
That one took me a while to get.
I'll bet it was Bon Ami cleansing powder - and old last resort trick to abrade the cylinders to wear in faster.
