Rotella 15W40 CJ-4 "triple Protection" oil
1536 is a Napa Gold automotive oil filter
No oil additives used. FP3000 in the gas.
I had less oil consumption than the Honda GN4 oil, back to normal (very little) for this bike now.
The concerns of a weaker additive package in the CJ-4 oil don't seem to be much of an issue in my bike. At 8,000 miles, the oil looks good and probably could go many more miles.

I put Valvoline Max Life 10W40 blend in it this time and I plan on testing in another 8,000 miles

Good to see that the Rotella CJ4 is doing well in motorbike applications. You shoule have seen the looks on people's faces when I told the to try diesel oil in their bikes (I work in a shop as a mechanic) they just rolled their eyes. Old mentality I guess...

OMG you should have seen the reactions when I showed up at my buddies house with rotella, they were like "that is a diesel oil". I was like no it's not, it is a hdeo that most just associate with diesels. They said the best is maxima synthetic, i was like yeah, I am going to pay $20+ for several quarts of that when i change out every 2-3 rides when I can get a gallon of rotella, delvac 1300 or delo 400 for half the price and still a pretty darn good oil. Less $ and i am getting more.

And in the end you will probably get good wear results on a regular basis with the diesel oil which will cost less than more expensive designer oils.

Good to hear from you again sunruh.
I've used plenty of synthetics in my day but I can't see getting much better service than I am with this $8.88 a gallon oil :)
Having fun testing the different oils but the tests cost WAY more than my oil changes

Nope, no change in silicon. I had an emgo filter in it for the first tests but changing to the Honda OEM filter didn't help. Can't find anything loose in the intake so I guess these values are the norm for my bike.
As for the Napa filters, I really didn't have a good reason to change. I made a bulk purchase for my cars from Fleetfilter so I picked up some filters for the bike at the same time.

Rick, take note of how the maxlife cleans up the inside. Started using it early this year in my enduro bike and was amazed how clean the clutch plates became. At valve inspection the topend was clean like new parts.
cam and follower wear surfaces also looked great under a magnifier, as good as I've seen with this type motor. Not sure how it will hold grade for your long oci, but it's surely not a marketing gimmick oil, it is different.

you obviously need to change to a $10qt oil

Truly. In fact, I think I'm going to insist that Wal-Mart take $40 for a gallon of Rotella next time.

"But why, sir?" They will ask.

And I will say: "Because this works well in my motorcycle and as everyone knows, only expensive oil works well in a motorcycle."

I'm pleased to see the numbers you got back on the 8K mile run. I've seen comparably good numbers on 3K runs with the new CJ-4 Rotella.

I'm no chemist, but I would think if the lower ZDDP in the CJ-4 formulation was a real problem (as some claim), then we'd see an elevation in some of the metals, right? In other words, oil analysis is going to show if an oil isn't doing a good job lubricating and protecting, correct?

What I'm getting at is this -- if the UOA's keep coming back like this, what possible argument can the anti-CJ4/SMers offer about why we shouldn't use the oil?

It will simply make your clutch slip and your cams will be toast.
That's why.
And the dealer told me so, as he handed me the proper $12 qt fluid.

Don't always believe what the dealer says.

I think he was being sarcastic

Can you tell I ma a diesel guy who doesn't know much about motorcycles? But I am very interested in usage of diesel oil in those applications. Seems like a great alternative if 10W40 is recommended to use a diesel oil. Diesel oil has great benefits to it.

Jaybird knows better...he was being sarcastic. D-Roc, I used HDEO's on about 10 different motorcycles over the past 40 years...and as recent as 2006. I really like them for motorcycles, I'd recommend them to most anyone. However, I finally found something that holds grade better, and works great on my current bike, so I haven't used HDEO's for about a year...my only concern would be to make sure the newer ones keep performing as well as the older formulations. I imagine they will continue to serve motorcycles well, just as in the past.

Don't mind me- just interested in the results of HDEO in motorcycles- and how there are some myths and uninformed opinions out there, (like those at work I have told about HDEO in bikes- and some dealers) Sometimes difficult to see sarcasm in black and white. Funny though how some people can be so shortsighted. They don't read between the lines. I told them that even Shell has a forum where you can discuss that. But when you are surrounded in a shop where many have a narrow view there is not much you can say.
Thanks guys
