Would you buy a broken car to rebuild for your teen?

The early s40 are Mitsubishi based, but the second gen (2005+) are instead related to the Mazda 3 and Euro Ford Focus, guess that makes them cousins to the USA Focus.

Second gen gets a five cylinder engine, fairly strong acceleration with the turbo.

We did good with p2 Volvos here. The only drawback is those cars DO continue to need small things, and regularly, when they hit high miles. My kids got so used to me fixing things with or for them, that one was sluggish to put her own effort into it, and her solution was to just drive my car instead. I let it go a few times but had to finally put my foot down. We’ve got 4 kids… so that’s 6 cars I was somehow maintaining while also working my own job. When my daughter started using the Volvo dealer for service, we quickly found out that, while excellent, they were super expensive.
