If it's the old style, asbestos, head gasket and it's in good shape it can be reused. The newer ones, toss.
It may not burn that much oil. Since you don't know the background on the engine it may have never been maintained. Check the breather too, sometimes they gum up and don't work.
I'm glad you checked the clearances though. That should solve the "breathing back" problem.
