the large 1lb shot actually just hit the valve cover and the intake; didn't hit the block at all that I could tell.

That's a bit of a misrepresentation. He nearly got killed - he had nothing to do with what transpired as far as I know. The ammo he purchased was loaded catastrophically wrong, possibly on purpose. All prior rounds were normal and the gun was in good operating condition. The gun itself should have been able to take a very over pressurized round per the designer/manufacturer, so whatever happed was WAY outside the normal operating envelope.
