The Honda and Toyota OEM filters are shrink-wrapped, either partially or totally. I have been using Mobil-1 and Purolator lately, and it bothers me a bit that they're not . They're just in a cardboard box where dirt and dust can penetrate.

Are my concerns over-blown? Would I be safer to use the OEM filters?

I always use P1's now and they're not shrink wrapped. I've never even thought about it. I assume your worries are a bit overblown. If it were a problem I doubt they would sell filters in cardboard boxes.

IMO....YES....most filters (especially popular ones) are on the shelf for very short periods....thus elimanating any concern for dirt and dust to be an issue. If you stash filters at home for a long period........than putting them in a plastic bag might make sense.

I have used some cheap filters that were made in China, and still had shrink wrap over the baseplate.

The Purolator made bulk pack filters under many different names come stuffed 12 to a box, with card paper dividers to keep them from banging and scraping each other. No shrink wrap.

On my oil filters in my stash, I put some cling wrap around the filters to keep the dirt, dust, and who knows what out. Some of those filters will sit for YEARS! I don't think most filters sit all that long on the shelf @ the store. Some rare applications might be different, but for my vehicles I am sure they sell pretty quickly.

Safer?

Yes they are safer... I wrap my filters in bullet proof titanium/kevlar wrap to keep who knows whatever accumulates in un-guarded filters left open to the universe.

I buy OEM Hyundai filters (made by Hyundai affiliate Mobis) because of their quality, specs, and value, but I'm also impressed by the baseplate shrink-wrap and cleanliness of the thread area and internals.
