Is Castrol Syntec synthetic?

How do you define a synthetic? Marketers in the US consider Group III synthetic. The Syntec 0w-30 (Made in Germany) is a synthetic as defined as in Europe (Group IV/V).

It is common knowledge and pretty much undisputed that the American Syntec has been a group III oil since 1997. They were sued in 1999 by Mobil for claiming it was a true synthetic. Castrol won that round.

Since then synthetic became mostly a marketing term that includes group III oils as well as Group IV and Group V oils.

In other words since 1999 "synthetic" Hydrocarbons means the same thing as synthetic oil, almost nothing.

It's a Group III synthetic; or at least that's the way I've always thought of it as being.

Standard PR response: Well, first I think we'd need to define synthetic (can be exchanged for "completely destroyed" in other usage) before I could comment.
