So I just picked up a used boat and trailer, with unknown brand and type of grease in the bearings. I'm going to totally clean them out and start fresh. I want a grease which is readily available, so no boutique stuff that I have to buy out of some guy's trunk. Commonly available in my area are:

Lubrimatic "Marine Corrosion Control and Trailer Wheel Bearing Grease"
Base: Calcium Sulfonate Complex
Dropping Point: 550º F
Color: Dark Blue-Green

CRC Sta-Lube "Multi-Purpose Boat Trailer and Marine Equipment"
Base: Aluminum Complex
Dropping Point: 450º F
Color: Milky / light blue. Some oil is separating out from the grease.
Also, the tube has an ingredient list. Strangely, it lists Calcium sulfonate as an ingredient, as well as aluminum fatty-acid omega3 tofu complex.

This is a large tandem axle trailer, weighs in around 6500 lbs with the boat on it. It has drum brakes, and they do get a little warm. I use it in salt water, so corrosion control and water resistance are the most important features to me.

Any opinions on which one would be a better choice?

Thanks,

Dan

a Calcium Sulfonate complex thickener is what you are after for water/corrosion control, so I'd opt for the first one.

Agree with tdi-rick. And

There are older threads about SCHAEFFERS #221 and #238 by the site originator, BOB, that are worth reading for problems of rapid cooling (dunking) and water wash-out.
