Browning's first prototype for an auto loading shotgun was quite a bit different from what would eventually become the Auto-5:

Mozart supposedly composed everything in his head, could hear it in his head, before he ever wrote a note on the paper. John Browning was the same way. He could conceive and design a working firearm in his head, see how all the parts would interact and function, and then build a prototype from only rudimentary sketches, not real blueprints. He was a true genius.

Ah...the photo of the shotgun is actually from the Browning Museum in Ogden, UT.
