I finally had the time to install a new HDD and transfer over a current image of the failing drive. Everything went well, and the computer is performing better but not as good as I had hoped.
I can at least do more than one thing at a time, and it doesn't take 60 seconds to respond to mouse input so that's a good thing. It does still slow down a little when opening programs from desktop icons, and it takes 15 seconds to open up any web browsers. My wife did install Google docs, Chrome and all the other stuff that comes with it, so that may be part of the problem.
