Wife and I spent 6 days in Yosemite. Picked up a Nissan Versa at the Fresno airport. 1.8l engine is pretty gutless as it has no turbo. Handling was surprisingly good for an econobox with Kumho tires (and I drive an M240i with Michelin PSS tires!).

Never driven one but rode in plenty in Mexico. They serve their purpose. I would drive it for a commuter
If you drive a BMW M, of course it's going to seem gutless. For what it is at the price it sells for, it's pretty nice.
That 2024 is probably like a Maxima compared to my base model 2015 Versa 1.6 sedan with the 4AT. Well.. At least like a Sentra.
We had a 2021 Versa four door sedan as a rental back then.
Not a bad little car and it did yield mid thirties fuel economy over the week that we had it. Enough room for four adults and a six year old in the center rear. Decent A/C as well.
Looks like you could buy a new one (stick!) for under eighteen grand, so a good choice for a buyer looking to get something new cheaply.

I looked at a manual transmission one (allegedly their last year), but the rear seat headroom was not nearly good enough, even for a sub-6 foot person.

Really? I'm 6' and have ridden in the back. It's not a Limo but I fit upright.
Don't buy an econobox (perhaps the most eco of them all) and expect a roadster.
We had one go through the auction on Monday. A 2020 model w/ 5 speed and only about 18,000 miles.
It sold for $14800 plus a $450 buy fee.
We also had a 2020 Chevy Trax LS, true miles unknown due to a clerical error. 17k miles and I thought it looked pretty sharp
It sold for only $12700 plus the fee. I was the second high bidder high bidder. I tried like crazy to find a buyer before the sale but I just couldn't find anyone who wanted it so I had to let it go by.

I was revving that sucker a lot. What impressed e was how well it handled.

We had a new one as a rental for a few days in 2022 or so and I was really amazed what a nice little car it was. Reminded me how far basic cars have come in that you could buy Nissan's cheapest econo car and it was comfortable, and drove/handled really nice. Compare that to some of the entry level cars of years gone by, like say the Escort, or Tempo, which were turds in comparison, imo. I had no complaints about Versa at all. It's not a car I would personally buy for myself but not because I thought it was a bad car.
