Oil puddling on stick after 2k miles, 11 months

I think there’s a misunderstanding here. I just wrote a summary of the video and it agrees with what you wrote. The oil consumption and failure has nothing to do with the oil being used. It’s all due to a design issue with the engine itself.

Oil puddling on stick after 2k miles, 11 months

That makes sense. Do you know if they made any changes to what counts as severe? Maybe it's just for Korea, but at around 7:45 in the video he mentions that "general driving" was classified as "harsh driving" under the new recommendations.

Oil puddling on stick after 2k miles, 11 months

I saw a video that went into some detail about that. It's in Korean but it has English subtitles: In short, a number of Hyundai 2.5L engines were experiencing excessive oil consumption and eventual starvation. A teardown showed that among other things, a piston ring was failing leading to...

What's wrong with my Audi A4?

Ah, gotcha. I'm aware of the tube but I wasn't sure if the MK7 came with the stick itself. And speaking of the tube, one very nice thing about the layout of that engine was that I could do an entire oil change without having to lift the car. Top mounted oil filter + oil extractor via the...

What's wrong with my Audi A4?

You're absolutely right, I looked it up and the MK7 doesn't have an oil level display. I'm probably mixing this all together with my own Audi. Do the MK7s come with dipsticks? I'll have to see how things are going the next time we speak. But he absolutely loves that car. The only thing he's...

What's wrong with my Audi A4?

I really don't know why certain engines are the way that they are. A friend of mine has an early MK7 GTI with an APR stage 1 tune on it. That car gets driven angry all the time and probably sees redline every other traffic light. It's been beaten on from day 1 and that engine burns no measurable...

What's wrong with my Audi A4?

Look, it's obvious that we disagree on this but we're not attacking each other or anything. There's no reason to not be civil here. I do respect where you're coming from but my ownership experience has been different from yours and I think that's fine.

No offense, man, but you're a guy on the internet. Just like me.

What's wrong with my Audi A4?

You saying that it is normal doesn't make it a fact either. When compared against other engines I've owned or have personally used the one in my A4 was the only one that needed to be topped off. All driven under similar conditions. My personal experience.

What's wrong with my Audi A4?

You seem to think that disagreeing with you means that I'm ignoring your posts. I don't care what the spec says. I had to add oil between OCIs on an engine with fewer than 30k miles. That's not acceptable. That's not normal. It shouldn't be normalized. I'm honestly not sure why you're so...

Porsche's own factory race team apparently uses M1 0w-40 FS

Yes, absolutely! When they brought the 919 Hybrid LMP out to do exhibition laps I watched it from the grandstands near turn 4 and it was so unnatural seeing that car slow down. It really looked like a ship exiting hyperspace as it approached a corner. I didn't get any of this when watching WEC...

What's wrong with my Audi A4?

Strange. When I click on those links I see a lot of people whose experiences are very similar to mine. Virtually all manufacturers have an absurdly high allowable oil consumption spec. You can cling to the spec and argue that it's normal, but there's nothing normal about modern low-mileage...

What's wrong with my Audi A4?

Thanks! And not at all. The EA888 actually has a very long history of oil consumption. So much so that Audi has a TSB addressing the issue. Consumer Reports also mentions the 2.0T here. The first step is to check the PCV and replace if necessary. If the consumption continues (which it did in...

Porsche's own factory race team apparently uses M1 0w-40 FS

I was fortunate enough to attend Porsche Rennsport Reunion at Laguna Seca Raceway back in 2018. It's a huge gathering where every conceivable model of Porsche is brought to a track and displayed and raced. One of my favorite parts of the event is that nothing is roped off and people can go right...

What's wrong with my Audi A4?

You joke about it now, but I had a 2017 A4 with the same EA888 gen 3and it didn't use any oil at first. I did all my own changes with Castrol 0w-40 and never abused the engine. As I got to 20k miles it started to consume oil and fast. From 20k to 25k it used about 3/4 of a quart. From 25k to...
