Oil change - do you remove oil pan?

I guess no one here has dropped an oil pan and found crud in the bottom of it or just dropped it to inspect or clean it during an oil change. People here analyze oil filter effectiveness and trace contaminants in oil, even pay for it and pour over minute differences in figures, yet dropping a...

Oil change - do you remove oil pan?

Do you ever remove your oil pan during an oil change, just to clean out every last possible drop of old oil? If so how often? I admit I haven't dropped an oil pan in probably 20 years, can't even remember which vehicle it was but I do remember it was easy to drop. If my current Astro wasn't...

Mod = oil pressure change = switch viscosity?

I don't tow, rarely use ac, drive conservatively, always use full synthetic oil with new filter. I just don't need the oil cooler function. The oil lines always end up leaking because GM insisted on using aluminum crimps and weak "paper clip" retention wires for the fittings. 3 fluid radiators...

Mod = oil pressure change = switch viscosity?

Yes the non-oil-cooler Astros had the same 5W-30 spec but I think they also had different oil pressure settings to account for the lack of oil cooler.

Mod = oil pressure change = switch viscosity?

Question: Should I change to a different weight/viscosity synthetic oil as a result of a modification and resulting change in oil pressure? 1997 Chevy Astro 4.3 V6 170,000 miles 5W-30 as GM Manual states (Mobil1) Car Quest (Wix/Napa Gold) oil filter location: Texas I did the "oil cooler...

Global LifeTime now at HEB grocery store

Today I finally flushed the Dexcool out and replaced with Peak Global LifeTime concentrate that I bought from Napa for $16.49 per gallon. 10 hours later I see Peak Global LifeTime 50/50 at HEB grocery store for $8.47 per gallon regular price! Good news for us who thought only Walgreens and Napa...

Best way to plug unused radiator oil cooler holes?

Sorry I should have expanded on a few things to clarify. I wanted to keep things simple to avoid going off on tangents - oil cooler deletes and radiator electrolysis and such... Here's a bit more info: My current radiator needs to be replaced and I have already bypassed the engine and trans...

Best way to plug unused radiator oil cooler holes?

What is the best way to plug unused radiator oil cooler holes (engine oil or trans oil)? New radiators come with plastic caps/inserts for the oil coolers but I don't think they were meant as an option to be left in. Are brass plugs typically used with some thread sealer, or maybe heavy duty...

    Which of these 4 Synthetics...

At next oil change I am going with Mobil1 0W30 Advanced Fuel Economy. Unless someone can convince me to go with 0W20... For full synthetic oils, is there any benefit to using 5W30 or 10W30 instead of 0W30? Why don't we all just drop 5W30/10W30 and go to 0W30?

Thanks for the replies everyone. I am going to stay with Mobil 1 but I am switching to a better version - there is one version that I did not consider that has better cold AND hot performance than the standard 5W-30 Mobil 1 I have always used, according to Mobil 1's chart - "Mobil 1 0W30...
