Dead Horse Warning: What's with the short OCI's?

So let me start another thread on this. It's now 2017. Newer cars have oil life monitors. Yet I see late model cars in the UOA section with 5000 mile or less OCIs, with great results and lots of life left on the oil. Why? I mean it's better than 3000 mile OCI's, since we're not in the 70's...

    10 Mercedes E550 M1 0W40 FS 105,000 mi Fram Ultra

Looks like the Fram Ultra (needed it now, had nothing else available) worked just fine. It didn't collapse, and the orange nitrile gaskets were a nice touch. Bummer they misidentified the engine, but overall the wear metals are low enough that I doubt it matters. Just did a B service -...

Given that the "lifetime fill" the dealerships tell you it has need to be changed every 20,000 miles for towing service...

Gear Oil Recommendations for a 2011 4Runner TE

We have been towing. We have been offroading. And depending on the maintenance schedule, we should have changed the diff and t/c oil at 20,000 miles. Given that the interval is so short, what's best? Toyota's oil is a 75W85, but there is no aftermarket in that viscosity, and 75W90 is close...
