Renewable Lubricants and why copper additive

Renewable Lubricants and why copper additive

I'm a newb, so go easy if this has been discussed. I switched to RLI 10w30 HD in my LS7 and the UOA looked great, but copper spiked. The previous oil was Castrol Edge (it did well too). Here is an article that explains why...

Here's an interesting article on why RLI uses copper as an additive: http://www.copper.org/publications/newsletters/innovations/1999/09/oil.html

With shipping I paid $9.47/qt. I agree that it didn't show a substantial improvement over the Edge (that would be nearly impossible since the Edge numbers were already very low). But even so, the wear numbers were down using the RLI (copper excepted). The reason for experimenting is that some...

    Renewable Lubricants, Inc. 10w30 HD 3900mi LS7 Z06

Here's a message I received from someone who uses this oil regularly: Hi Mark, Copper is an anti-oxidant, and RLI usually has around 100 ppm, so your 82ppm is fine, maybe even low (could be [censored]'s equip didn't detect it all or calibration is different than what I'm used to seeing, and...

    Renewable Lubricants, Inc. 10w30 HD 3900mi LS7 Z06

The person that recommended this oil to me told me copper was an additive, and he showed me his report that showed even higher copper levels. The only copper in the engine would be in the main, cam and rod bearings. If they are wearing, I'd assume lead would also be very high, which isn't. The...

Street driven like last time. Very similar except the copper is high (I heard it's an additive in this oil?), and the TBN and viscosity are fantastic.

    Valve guide wear & UOA

I will, I posted the first one using Castrol Edge. The latest is using RLI 10w30 HD. Should have the results by the end of the week.

    Valve guide wear & UOA

Thanks. I was hoping that it could. The LS7/Z06 community has had some alarming exhaust valve failures (it's a two piece, sodium filled stainless valve) and in all circumstances the iron guides are excessively worn. Some that haven't experienced any failure have discovered during a head swap...

    Valve guide wear & UOA

Can a UOA register wear metals caused by valve guides wearing? Specifically, the exhaust valve guide, which also has an oil seal. Thanks Mark

    Castrol Edge 5W/30, 8073 mi, 07 Murano, VQ35DE V-6

I put 3700 miles on Castrol Edge 5w30 in my 09' Z06 LS7 and the UOA showed excellent wear metals count too, the exception was the viscosity took a dive to 54.7. It basically turned into a 20w oil. I have a 10.5 qt dry sump capacity and big oil cooler. Not sure why it did that. I've moved on to...

    Castrol Edge 5w30 3700 mi 09 Z06

I have mixed feeling on this oil. While the wear metals speak for themselves, I didn't track the car and get the oil temp up. With a 10.5 qt capacity and oil cooler, the oil temp rarely gets above 180F, and struggles to get above 150F in the winter. 10w30 in this brand would likely be better in...

    Castrol Edge 5w30 3700 mi 09 Z06

I replaced it with the same since I had already bought in bulk. Next oil change will be Renewable Lubricants 10w30 HD. I know the viscosity dropped off, but the wear metals look excellent. Fe looks great, which was a concern since there are some LS7's that are experiencing early valve guide wear.
