Synthetic vs. Paper, Some Interesting Info

I ran across this: I don't know about a big difference in engine life, but I do think the desorption of contaminates due to media flex seems logically probable. I wonder if that's the reason PureOne uses a string around their center? I guess if going with paper, the thicker/denser the...

A Syn Blend made exclusively for "Winter" use

I came across this product on the QS site, Winter Syn Blend Motor Oil. The specs look unusual: cSt @ 40C 49.89 cSt @ 100C 10.5 VI 207 CCV -35C 3750 CCV -40C 15000 Low temp pumping vis -35C cP 8100 Low temp pumping vis -40C cP 15000 Product Data Sheet So, my simple logic would infer that...

GF-4 - Syntech blend & Durablend are NOT ACEA certified anymore

Examining oil bottles at the store(s) today, I noticed GF-4 Valvoline Durablend is not ACEA certified, except for the 5w-20(I believe it was GF-4) - has an ACEA A1 cert listed(and the Ford cert also), No other GF-4 weight does however. Strangely enough the rear label on all the weights mention...

Mobil DC + blend, why the mediocre cold flow specs?

Remember this is a supposed GIII w/PAO oil. I thought if not the HM 5w-30 then for sure the NV 5w-30 would make a great "winter" oil. But the blends 5w-30s' CCS and MRV performance doesn't even surpass pre SM, basic DC? 5w-30 blend NV cP - CCS 5896 MRV 20800 blend HM cP - CCS 5970 MRV...

Mopar P/S fluid compatible with generic P/S fludis?

Although not a scientific answer, I have mixed Mopar and generic P/S fluid with no apparent problems over about 30,000 miles. I will say though, that the pump and rack were already worn(noise & poor wheel return) prior to adding it(generic), so I knew I would be replacing parts soon. Mopar now...

    10w-40 Gets A Bad Rap!

I realize this has been discussed before, but I continue to see the myth perpetuated. The criticism of dino oil of this grade has been based on the viscosity "spread" and therefore the ASSUMED high amount of VII used. I believe looking at the viscosity index number is the most accurate way to...

FormulaShell Full Synthetic MSDS = PAO?

I don't have that much MSDS expertise but here's what I found; Rotella T syn blend MSDS states it contains "synthetic hydrocarbon base stock" 10-30% and has the PAO CAS#(68037-01-4) listed. The FormulaShell Full Synthetic MSDS also says it contains "synthetic hydrocarbon base oil" 75-95%, but...

Jet lube as an engine treatment.

Yeah, you never know when someone might have some good advice. I'm far from an expert but the "ester" theory would seem to explain the dramatic effect.

    Why no mainstream ashless oils?

If wear reduction and desposit control are main priorities, wouldn't an ashless formulation be superior? In air compressor and natural gas engine applications ashless oils are the norm, why not in gasoline engines? [ May 08, 2004, 03:53 AM: Message edited by: 69 Riv GS ]

Redline for Honda mower? (Molakule) & anyone

It's a 1979 walk behind, with a total engine rebuild(+ port & polish of course!) last year. The rings were very worn(.160 end gap) as were the valve guides. Its had mobil 1 10w30 then 15w-50 its entire life. Last year(after rebuild) I ran mobil 1 0w-40 and thought it ran very smoothly. But I...

Havoline synthetic 10w-30 = high flash / low NOACK

I was browsing their site and couldn't believe it. Flash point C/F 258/496 NOACK 5% cSt at 40C 61.4 cSt at 100C 10.1 pour point C/F -44/-47 Looks darn good for a group III, actually looks better than mobil 1(group IV); but you never hear much about it. This oil has been showing great...
