Nissan DLR put 0w20 in car that specs 5w30. worry?

Just stay away from dealer quick lube services or any other quick lube places. The hack working the lube bay at the dealer makes minimum wage (by auto repair standards) and couldn't care less about overfilling your engine with the wrong grade of oil probably from a filthy bulk oil dispenser.

    Flat Tappets: Observed Failures

Keep in mind that flat tappet cams were never "broken in" on the assembly line, nor was any "high zinc" assembly lube lovingly smeared over every square inch of the cam and lifters on factory assembly lines. If you were lucky, a fixture dribbled some normal bulk engine oil on the lobes and...

    Any ZIPPO lighter collectors here?

I'm not a serious collector, but I have a few. I thought BITOG-ers would enjoy this one the most. It dates to the 1940's I believe and it has great patina. It's heavy compared to the new ones and still works great. They don't make 'em like they used to no matter what Zippo might tell you.

2000 5.3 knock, help diagnosing cause?

That's classic cold piston slap. If you can modulate the hollow knock like that with the throttle around 1200 to 1800 rpm, it's piston slap. Basic engine noises 101.

    Coil pack going bad?

Classic low fuel pressure symptoms. It's highly unlikely that plugs, coil, throttle body, etc would cause this issue.

    Oil leak- Looking for advice

That's not even a leak. Just a seepage stain. I'm surprised that even a Ford tech would think this is an issue on a Honda. There seems to be a ridiculous "zero tolerance" for anything that's "dirty" on an engine nowadays. Engines are dirty machines. Chasing a little oily grime here and there...

    10W40 HM oil in a Chevrolet 4.2L inline 6?

I don't know why 10W40 went almost extinct anyway. It seems like the perfect weight in temperate climates for an engine with any amount of miles on it. Sheer stability HAS to be better now than it was when this was almost the default oil weight in the 1970s and 1980s. None of my engines would...

PP 5W20 bottom of jug debris

I've had sediment (or whatever) fall out of every brand of oil I've used. Is this stuff that you want in your engine like EP additives (shake the bottle up) or stuff that you don't want in an engine (leave the stuff settled out). Oil companies in general are a little too secretive about...

    What are we paying for?

I don't think brands like SuperTech can be considered "no name" oils anymore. WPP knows their stuff and Walmart doesn't advertise Supertech so you save a little that way. I just wish there was more transparency in the consumer retail oil market. All of this "top secret" stuff gets old after a...

    Interesting oil extractor

This is the only kind of oil change my air cooled VW sees. I got tired of pulling the strainer plate because there was never anything on the strainer and I bought a Pela extractor. I get exactly 2 1/2 quarts out which is the rated oil capacity. I change the oil so often in it that it really...

Can vegetable oil be used as motor oil?projectfarm

There was a lot of glitter in that oil, but Project Farm always uses old abused engines. It seemed like the veg oil flushed a lot of old stuff out of the crankcase. I have a few 2 stroke Nitro RC car engines that used to use Castor Bean oil (vegetable oil) and top RPM on those is around 33,000...

    ZDDP in used cars

I'm curious what the psi load is on other parts of an engine besides a flat tappet riding on a cam lobe. It seems like lots of other engine parts with high loads would be failing even in current production engines if modern low zddp oils were really that lame at EP protection. What's the psi...

    ZDDP in used cars

Aren't there lots of other areas in any engine that see high psi loads besides flat tappets? What about pushrods against rocker arms? (Way less contact area and very high PSI). What about a rocker arm against a valve stem? What about a wrist pin bushing? What about a rocker arm fulcrum? Don't...

    Hyundai/Kia Theta II oil pump?

Pretty sure this was one of the engines that they installed the rod bearings backwards in. Can't remember anything being said about the mains, but if it's anything to do with the bottom end on that engine at all, I'd run it by a dealer. There might be a new engine or at least a short block in...

Lower the crank to remove rear main rope seal?

After the rear main bearing cap is removed, just loosen the other cap bolts a couple of turns and pry the crankshaft down a fraction of an inch with a wooden dowel or something. Grab the upper part of the old rope seal with needle nose pliers and pull it out of the upper groove while a helper...
