Dino vs syunthetic in SUV Differentials?

I use Redline gear oil. It's been in the GC for over 50,000 miles with no issues, so I guess I won't panic and change the diffs this afternoon. lol Yea I seem to have a small fleet. It makes for a lot of fluid changes, and frequent bitog discussions. Thanks guys, BITOG rules!

Dino vs syunthetic in SUV Differentials?

Thanks for the info. I knew this issue had to have been investigated. The 05+ Jeep Grand Cherokees front diffs seem to have high pinion gears. A guy had his front axle replaced 3 times in one month with oem axles. A Chrysler rep came to the conclusion the factory fill (1 cm under the fill...

Dino vs syunthetic in SUV Differentials?

I read a comment that some of the axle manufacturers won't warranty differentials if synthetic gear oil is used. The claim is the fluidity of the synthetic won't adequately lubricate the gears? Any thoughts?

    Oil came out gooopy!

I had a similar problem with M1 looking like something out of the La Brea Tar pits @ 500 miles coming out of my Vette. The car had been on a steady diet of M1 all of it's life. I changed to PP and problem solved. No more M1 for me...

    RX350 5w20 vs 5w30?

My wife is not taking the RX to the track! lol I agree I'll likely stick with 5w30. As the saying goes, the biggest enemy of good enough is "perfect".

    RX350 5w20 vs 5w30?

Thanks for the input guys. I live in sunny California, so temps are not extreme either way. What would you guys run in this engine? Pennzoil $15 rebate form: http://pennzoil.com/documents/04946%20PZ%20online%20form.pdf

    RX350 5w20 vs 5w30?

My wife's 09 RX350 manual and the oil filler cap specifically states 5w30. The dealer recommends 5w20, pointing to a tsb allowing it's use. The tsb says use the viscosity recommended in the manual in one paragraph, and then goes on to recommend 5w20? Does it make a difference? I've been using...

Do engines need a "breakin" before synthetic??

I noticed a comment on a Jeep site that for engines not specifically designed to use synthetic you should wait until 10-15,000 miles before switching to synthetic. I can think of no rational for such a statement. Any truth to this? I have a 3.8 liter Wrangler with 4000 miles that needs it's...

So your Yellow 5w30 viscosity was down to 20w like mine was in a Jeep 4.7l V8. PP seems to do better in this regard.

Yellow Pennz vs PP 5w30 06 Jeep GC 4.7l

Here is Backstone's take on this... "It's hard to say for sure what caused it to drop like it did. The fuel could have been a factor, especially since we didn't find any this time. The viscosity was certainly better this time and that's where synthetics shine." You know for $20-25 in cost for...

Yellow Pennz vs PP 5w30 06 Jeep GC 4.7l

well this may be as good a head to head comparison as one can get. Same engine, back to back changes, engine reasonably broken in. Yellow looked fine except for the viscosity degradation. Could trace fuel really do that much? Running what amounts to 20w oil at the end of yellow interval made...

Yellow Pennz vs PP 5w30 06 Jeep GC 4.7l

Yellow was run first, then PP. 4500 on yellow, 5300 on PP. Yellow did have trace fuel, PP <.5

Yellow Pennz vs PP 5w30 06 Jeep GC 4.7l

Here is an interesting comparison. Same 4.7l engine 5w30 Yellow bottle vs PP. PP held up better, despite more miles, esp viscosity. Blackstone suggested running 6500 miles on the synthetic. Anyone still think PP is a waste for this vehicle? JEEP 4.7l V8 24,000 total miles Miles on Oil...

    PP 5w30, 7000 miles, 98 Corvette

I'm sure you're pleased with that report Patman. My 04 vette has 5500 miles on the same oil, so I'll be posting some numbers to compare with yours soon.

Gary I agree, while evreything seems "ok", it leaves that lingering unanswered question. I think most of us on this site are like-minded in your approach, otherwise we would just stop by our local Jiffy Lube when the change oil indicator came on and not worry about such things. Funny Blackstone...

    06 Grand Cherokee 19,000 4,500 m Penn Yel

So does anyone think the grade degradation is a significant concern? The 4500 mile OCI was well within Jeeps recommendation, and the SUV is 90% highway usage, no towing.

    06 Grand Cherokee 19,000 4,500 m Penn Yel

This is Blackstone's read on the numbers: At 19,500 miles we think you have a very nicely wearing 4.7 engine. Universal averages for this type of engine are based on an oil run of ~4,900 miles. You were just a little shy of that mark and your wear read well below universal average levels...
