Ok, yes, very important. Keep the pump level, don't tip it. If you cut too little of a line and then tip your sample, you could draw oil into the pump and have a big mess - trust me I did it. If you do it right, you can keep the oil off the pump (including the rubber seals).

No way, I don't know how far I could snake that thing by accident. When the engine is hot, I've melted the tubing when I've missed the hole and hit the exhaust. 30 min minimum cool down works for me. I keep the engine off - one less murphys law to worry about.
