If the rotten dynasauruses could spend millions of years under ground, I don't think a few years above ground will make a huge difference.
I have used oil that was opened 5 years ago to get the rings off the caps for rebate purposes (Pennzoil Platinum) and it my engine survived.
Oil and...

I use Rotella 10W-40 in a bike. It is a great bike oil as well. It does not have friction modifiers commonly found in car oils, which will mess up the wet clutch friction plates. And since the engine and transmission share the oil, shear resistance is important for a bike oil.

There are about 3% of CR-V's out there with the stick. Rare, but we do exist. We mostly hang out at hondasuv.com
In fact, some people on Hondasuv.com replaced the 6th gear holder in the tranny with the 6th gear from TSX/Civic Si/RSX-S and enjoy 30-35 mpg on the highway, while still pulling...

If it is loud now, it will be much quieter in the snow. Snow is an excellent sound deadening material.
I have a 4 year old Areins with 5.5 Tecumseh, and it is loud in the fall/spring when I do maintenance on it, but very quiet when put to work in 2 feet of snow.
Honda GX engine is probably the best designed engine for durability. Even the chinese made generators are using GX knock off's. I am not sure why Honda would not pursue them for copyright or whatever infringment. But, if you have one of those China made generators and need parts, look for a...
Nice rex.
Are you sure the "oil burning" issue if from oil seeping past the rings, and not the valvetrain?
Those engines are pretty much bulletproof. I would check the valve clearances. I think they need to be adjusted every 30,000 miles.
Now that you have gotten the factory filter off, read the shop manual where it says how tight the filter should be on. I never put it on tigher than hand tight. And don't forget to lube up the gasket with fresh oil before installation.

I can proudly say that I have been to Peterborough in February, and it wasn't significantly colder than Buffalo/Toronto. But it is still too cold for single grade oil.
