79Subaru

I am a mechanic, I work on both automotive engines and small diesel engines. I also work on cars as a hobby. My daily driver is a 1979 Subaru DL with an EA71S engine imported from Japan. It runs an early FWD dog gear manual transmission, and is set up with 175/80R13 mud tires. The engine is set up with a single Holley 1904 carb off a Ford inline 6 mounted to a modified single carb intake. The cam is solid lifter, very large and I am unsure of the specs. What I have found suggests advertised duration of 305/305 and unknown lift. Compression is around 12:1-13:1. Valve springs are about 110lb on the seat and have titanium retainers. Valves are about the biggest that will fit in the heads. Runs GM HEI ignition, Denso distributor, Suzuki Denso alternator, and newer Subaru starter. Currently running around 42 degrees of total timing, tuned for 93 octane, and making about 115 HP. Tuned for E85, running 54 degrees timing, it makes around 130HP at 6700 RPM. Powerband is 4000-6700 RPM. Oiling system consists of earlier Subaru EA62 oil pump, relief valve shimmed for the larger bearing clearances, with a Ford Racing 90 degree billet oil filter adapter. Runs a PH2/FL820 filter. Oil used is Mobil 1 FS X2 5W50, Mobil 1 Supercar 5W50, or Mobil 1 Racing 0W50 in fall, winter, and spring, and Amsoil 10W60, Motul 300V 10W60, or Triax 10W60 in summer, but only if it's above 80 degrees. Otherwise, Mobil 1 Racing 0W50 then as well.
About the only normal cars I work on outside of work are my mother's. This would be a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen TDI with around 400,000 miles on it, it runs best on RLI 15W40 and an Amsoil EA15K06 filter, and a soon to be delivered 2024 Buick Envista with a 1.2 LIH turbo inline 3 cylinder, oil yet to be determined, filter most likely Fram FE12060.
