EXTREME PRESSURE AND ANTI-WEAR PROTECTIONOne of the primary functions of a grease is to reduce friction and wear in the bearingbeing lubricated under various operating conditions. Many bearing applications aresubjected to high shock loading, continuous low speed/high torque conditions and insome cases severe overload conditions. These conditions often result in boundarylubrication conditions that result in metal to metal contact between the moving parts ofthe bearing. Once metal to metal contact occurs, excessive wear and eventualpremature failure of the bearing will occur.Because of these aspects it is important that a grease possess good to very goodextreme pressure and anti-wear properties.Schaeffer Mfg’s Aluminum Complex Base and Bentone Base Greases providesignificant anti-wear and extreme pressure protection, not only due to the naturallyhigh film strength contributed by the 100% pure paraffin base oils and polyalphaolefinsynthetic base fluids, the use of low thickener content that allows more base oil andfluid to be available to help dampen shock and distribute the solid lubricants andextreme pressure additives over the face of the bearings, a long lasting highlyeffective extreme pressure additive system, but also due to the presence ofMolybdenum Disulfide, Synthesized Moly and/or other solid lubricants. Once theMolybdenum Disulfide, Synthesized Moly and/or other solid lubricants are plated to themetal surfaces of the bearing , they form a long lasting solid lubricant film that iscapable of withstanding pressures in excess of 500,000 psig. This long lasting solidlubricant film prevents metal to metal contact and damaging frictional wear fromoccurring, especially during periods of high speed, high shock loads and extremepressure. This results in in not only reduced wear and a reduction in contact areatemperatures, but also in increased bearing life, less downtime and extendedlubrication cycles.
